Your septic system has a very important job. Your septic system is an underground wastewater treatment center for your family.
Your septic system is made up of a septic tank and drainfield. Using the process of technology and nature, septic systems treat wastewater from bathrooms, laundry and kitchen sinks. It’s job is to separate solid waste from smaller particles, thus creating a way to eliminate sewage waste from our homes. How does it do this?
All water leaves your home through a drainage pipe, this lead directly to your septic tank.
The septic tank then holds the drainage as the organic matter is broken down and turned into a sludge that settles to the bottom of the tank. Oil, grease and other such items float to the top as scum. (Tampons would fit in this category, you check out the recently posted video about tampons in your septic tank to see what we are talking about –Click here to see the blog post.)
There is liquid wastewater (aka bath water, laundry water, water from running faucets) that also exists in the septic tank, this water exits the tank into what is called a drainfield, leaving the sludge behind in the tank.
The water that exits into the drainfield is then absorbed into the soil. The soil then absorbs treats the waste water until it is introduced into the groundwater.
Problems arise when the drainfield is overloaded with too much liquid. This will cause the drainfield to flood. When this happens the sewage is pushed up to the ground level and a homeowner may begin to see backups in toilets and sinks in the house.
